Tear Sheets

We use “tear sheets” in this class to help develop our “swipe file” … Those swipe file pieces will help to serve as inspiration as you face the blank page. (AND you are required to have at least one inspiration layout page for each assignment)

Where can you find tear sheets? Ask friends and family for magazines and junk mail. Visit a library or bookstore. Look for publication at garage sales, thrift stores and used book stores. Check at hotels, grocery stores and truck stops for brochures. Find a state visitor or welcome center. There are so many places to look – but you may need to leave your room!

Not sure what a page should look like? Check out these inspiration tear sheets

I have collected a number of sample pages and I have posted them on Google drive. They should help get you started as you look for inspiration pieces.

Tear Sheets

Editors of every publication, whether it’s Men’s Health or Vogue, will send a tear sheet to a freelance writer that has had their work published. A tear sheet is exactly what it sounds like: It is a sheet of paper torn from a magazine. In the 20th Century, editors would literally tear an article out of their magazine and drop it into the mail. While composition and delivery changed with the advent of the digital age, the purpose has not.

Swipe File

A swipe file is simply a set of templates or examples that you keep on-hand and refer to when you begin a new project. If you’re a designer, your swipe file may be comprised of great logo designs you’ve come across, creative navigation, unique layouts, fonts and other elements of typography, and stock photos.

Student Publications

  • DO NOT USE CLASS   OR THE STUDENT SAMPLES AS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION PIECES
  • NOTE: Samples are for reference only, the requirements may have changed since these were produced.
